What Do Our Taxes Pay For?
A few months ago, my brother passed out in the middle of the night, and his then-roommate Frankie G called 911. The San Francisco Fire Department came, gave my brother a little oxygen, loaded him up and took him a whopping three (3) miles (and I'm rounding up) to the hospital. The cost of this ambulance ride? $989.00. The amount of this cost that Kaiser will pay? $50.00.
If you know, I'd love to learn why it is that people think Kaiser is so great. And, if you know what exactly our taxes are going towards that they're NOT going towards things like the fire departments, I'd love to know that too.

new reader... checking out the archives. great read so far. :D
I'm in Canada and I just wanted to pop any bubbles you guys might be carrying around about how GREAT Medicare is in Canada compared to your benefits there.
I had an ambulance attend after I was attacked on the way to work one morning -- at the insistence of the cops, despite my telling them I was fine. The paramedics examined and cleaned up scrapes on my knee and hand, and then left. I was transported to the hospital by the police in their cruiser because of the intention of the attacker and my need for my 'wounds' to be seen (for the legal beagles) and to see a counselor and so forth.
The bill? About $300. For NO TRANSPORT. WTF. My **work** benefits paid the majority of it, but regular ordinary Medicare didn't TOUCH the incurred cost.
Just thought I'd let you know that it isn't, in fact, better Up North than it is there.
