Wanna Know A Secret?
The answer I give in my head is "You bet your ass I do!" while I gleefully jump up and down clapping my hands like a twice-a-day rider of a SpEd bus. What usually comes out is a very casual and jaded "Sure." But I love, Love, LOVE hearing secrets. Not only do I love hearing any sort of juicy gossip, but I love hearing what other people consider their own juicy gossip, and thinking about whether if that secret were mine, I would consider it one. I love seeing the layers of secrets get told as time passes, and deeper secrets are revealed. Until eventually you find out someone has been fired from a dozen jobs, or they accidentally unbraided the hair on their doll from Israel-that-was-just-for-looking-at-but-not-for-touching, and couldn't rebraid it and were so worried about getting in big trouble for playing with the doll that maybe they buried it in their garbage pail because they didn't know what else to do. Uhhh.... I'm really sorry, Mommy.
Someone asked me last night if I wanted to hear their secret. You bet your ass I did. So I got told a secret. (No, I'm not going to post it here.) What I asked after I heard the secret was "Why?" meaning, why did you do what you did? But what I was wondering behind that was, why is THAT considered a secret for you? What part of that is the part that makes you feel like it needs to be hidden? It was late at night and the conversation will continue another time maybe.
I always want to know more about people than is appropriate to ask. Maybe I shouldn't be so fascinated by other people. But if you tell me you went somewhere, I want to know:
Why'd you go there?
Who'd you go with?
Did you like it?
What did you like about it?
What did you wear?
Do you want to go back?
Do you think I'd like it?
Why? What about it do you think I would specifically like?
Are you going back soon?
Will you do the same things the next time you go there that you did the last time you went?
I could go on and on.
I used to want to be a psychologist. I thought it would be an easy job where I'd make lots of money. Sit in your leather chair with your fancily manicured nails, ask people why they think they did what they did, why they think they thought how they thought, and collect money. Every so often write a recommendation on a patient's behalf or do some psychological evaluations. Make sure to exude your disgust of your patients thoroughly. What's that now? Oh. I guess that's just what my psychologist did then. I could leave that part out. But I think a huge part of what appealed to me about being a psychologist, aside from guiding people towards solving their own problems, was hearing their secrets. Knowing what they would be paying me money to hear about.
I'm never going to be a psychologist. But I will always love hearing people's secrets.

Oh, I love it when you confess stuff like this. It makes me feel not so bad about my little indulgences....
I like to say that paparazzi are evil and they should leave celebrities to live their private lives in private, but I'm addicted to celebrity gossip.
I pretend not to be interested in what my neighbors do, but I love when I drive past their houses and see through the open windows what they watch on tv or how they've decorated the living room.
I say my cousin's divorce is none of my business, but I'm fascinated by the details of who's getting what.
I don't pass on this information. Ever. But I love getting it.
Word! You must have seen that movie where Barbra Streisand is a psychiatrist with fantastic nails (something about a mirror with 2 faces I think - entertaining but not as much as Barbra in "Nuts" where she is a hooker - lololol). I LOVE to find out things about people - they will often tell strangers things they would not tell people they know, so planes and public transportation are fertile grounds for their scuttlebutt!
Used to imagine a big book you could go to, and look up someone and see their life story - what they did and why. Lo and behold - the net provides this to an extent, as bloggers reveal quite a bit over time of themselves and their lives. Long live the blog(gers)!!!
Are you a reporter in disguise? ... or perhaps an undercover cop?
Greets to the webmaster of this wonderful site! Keep up the good work. Thanks.

Well don't ever be afraid to ask me any questions. I'm an open book. I'm also a good secret keeper. You didn't mention that part, are you a good secret keeper too?
